A Day Touring
Outside of Normandy...
Generally speaking, Battle Tours taken outside of Normandy are combined with one or more days touring in Normandy itself, the overall length of a tour of this type normally being 4 to 8 days total. After finishing your tour of the Battle of Normandy sites of your choice, you can be taken further afield to see the various sites of the First World War from 1914-1918, the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the Canadian Raid on Dieppe in 1942 and the Nazi's last gamble in World War Two, the Battle of the Bulge at Christmas 1944. These various sites are up to 6 hours driving apart and a tour of this type should not be undertaken lightly!
In travelling from one site to another on this tour you may well be passing very close to other places that might interest you but you are completly unaware of and if you are interested these sites can normally be added in without to much of a detour or time lost. A tour of this type can also be finished almost anywhere you want to in Northern France, Luxembourg or Belgium.
For an inquiry to see the main sites of the D-Day beaches and the Battle of the Bulge over 5 days an example of a typical itinerary could be:
Day One: D-Day tour
Day Two: Battle of Normandy Tour
Day three: Drive to Bastogne (6 hours drive)
On the drive to Bastogne there are short historical stops (30 – 60 minutes each) that could be made to break the journey at various places and you could choose one or two of the following if you are interested:
Cantigny (first American Army action of World War One)
The Somme Battlefields (British Battle of World War One)
Vimy Ridge (Canadian Battle of World War One)
Vaux sur Somme (where the Red Baron was shot down and killed in 1918)
Day four: Visit the Battle of the Bulge sites
Day five: Visit the Battle of the Bulge sites in the morning then drive back for a drop off in Paris (4 hours drive)
On the drive back to Paris one or two more short historical stops that can be made such as:
The Battlefield of the Meuse/Argonne (American Battle of World War One)
Sgt York Medal of Honor site (American Battle of World War One)
Compiegne (Where the Germans surrendered in 1918 and where the French surrendered in 1940)
Verdun (French Battle of World War One)
The above itinerary is just an example, but it gives an idea of what could be seen on a typical tour outside of Normandy.
A Day on Tour outside of Normandy runs from 9am to 6pm, just like on a D-Day tour, or can be shortened if you don't want to spend 9 hours a day on tour.
